Most of this job is one-off journeys — an airport here, a wedding there. But every driver has a few regulars, and the regulars are different. You learn the route without thinking, and you learn the person too.
My imaginary regular is a gentleman we’ll call Arthur, who I take to the same appointment every few weeks. Arthur is eighty-three, immaculately dressed, and has strong opinions about roundabouts. He’s waiting by the door before I arrive, coat on, ready five minutes early — which, as far as I’m concerned, makes him the perfect passenger.
The runs that matter most
These aren’t glamorous journeys. No airport buzz, no wedding sparkle. Just a familiar face who’d rather not take two buses and a long wait, and who likes that it’s the same friendly driver each time.
Reliability isn’t a slogan on these runs. It’s someone standing at their door, trusting that you’ll be there — so you always are.
We put the world to rights on the way — the state of the roads, the price of everything, the football. He tells me the same story about a wedding in 1965 and I laugh in the same place every time, because it’s a good story and he tells it well.
Why the regulars stay with you
Because this work, at its best, is about being dependable for people who are counting on you. The regulars are a standing reminder of that — and honestly, they’re some of our favourite miles.
